History of the Village

  • The community was originally laid out in 1815 as “Centerville.”

  • In 1836, it was chartered as “Lithopolis.”

  • The name “Lithopolis” is derived from the Greek language and means “Stone City.”

  • The name is a reference to the large deposits of free stone that were found in and near the town.

  • The native stone was used in the construction of the Wagnalls Memorial Library.

Village History

Wagnalls Memorial

Adam Willis Wagnalls was born in Lithopolis and later became a co-owner of the Funk & Wagnalls publishing company. In 1925, Mabel Wagnalls Jones, the daughter of Adam and Anna Wagnalls, dedicated the Wagnalls Memorial Library as a gift to the Village of Lithopolis and Bloom Township in honor of her parents. The beautiful memorial was built in the Tudor-Gothic style out of native stone.

You can learn more about the Wagnalls Memorial library and theatre at its website.
