The community was originally laid out in 1815 as “Centerville.”
In 1836, it was chartered as “Lithopolis.”
The name “Lithopolis” is derived from the Greek language and means “Stone City.”
The name is a reference to the large deposits of free stone that were found in and near the town.
The native stone was used in the construction of the Wagnalls Memorial Library.
Saving the planet, one honeybee at a time.
Section 5.2249 of the Ohio Revised Code proclaims as follows:
The first Saturday following the first Monday in September is designated as “Lithopolis Honeyfest Day” to honor the annual honey festival held on that day in The Village of Lithopolis in Fairfield County.
The purpose of the Lithopolis Honeyfest is to provide education – as well as food and entertainment – related to the art and science of beekeeping.
The Honeyfest held the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day.
Adam Willis Wagnalls was born in Lithopolis and later became a co-owner of the Funk & Wagnalls publishing company. In 1925, Mabel Wagnalls Jones, the daughter of Adam and Anna Wagnalls, dedicated the Wagnalls Memorial Library as a gift to the Village of Lithopolis and Bloom Township in honor of her parents. The beautiful memorial was built in the Tudor-Gothic style out of native stone.
